08 Dec Beatrice Warde
Ever since I was lucky enough to hear a recording of an interview with Beatrice Warde given while she was in Australia in 1959, I have been something of a fan. Happily we’ve found the piece on www.typeradio.org along with a share button so following that kind invitation here it is.
Apart from the wonderful style of the interviewer and of Beatrice herself the content of the interview is brilliant. There is an explanation of the importance of typography and also of the role of women in the printing industry. I particularly like the fact that Beatrice used to write using a nom de plume and that of a Frenchman. It would have been quite a revelation to find that the author was in fact a New-Yorker and a woman. Listen to her mellifluous voice and enjoy a few minutes of highly informative nostalgia – or a history lesson if you are too young!
